“10 HAIKU ABOUT ILLNESS & HEARTACHE” by Alexis Rhone Fancher

it’s been a hard year,
people around me dropping
like so many flies…

1.
Big Bus belches, groans,
it lumbers down Pacific
fast. It goes somewhere.

2.
I need a shower.
I smell of desperation.
Can’t get out of bed.

3.
My back is aching.
Hot & cold packs alternate.
No relief in sight.

4.
Is it a virus?
Enough antibiotics
can kill anything.

5.
If matter cannot
be destroyed or created
will we reconnect?

6.
I have a fever.
My skin is clammy & hot.
You’re not here to help.

7.
If acceptance is
key to integration, then
can I sleep at night?

8.
I ask for a sign,
just something small, no big whoop,
so I can move on.

9.
The pills are working.
The pain a dull ache inside.
How long till its back?

10.
If energy can’t
be created nor destroyed,
are you still out there?

it’s been a hard year,
people around me dropping
like so many flies…

Alexis, you hit a pulse of pain that people are experiencing everywhere, so deeply & simply, in a profound way. Thank you for your insight & raw emotion. LK

Alexis, so few words to say so much about the pain and sorrow we carry in this life. Yet, you endure, ever the surviver, the thriver. The words spewing from you are a balm for your soul, my soul, the souls of all of us in pain. Word by word, we are healed. Thank you for all the creative spirit you bring to this world.
    Love you,
    Roz

  3. Karen Ross says:

Alexis, you said the words that my body feels. The hot and cold ice packs, the pain, all the frustration that so many of us with chronic illness live with.

Thank you for bringing beautiful words to what most people cannot articulate.

Haiku is such a wnderful form to convey the essence of pain. It begins, peaks, and then is briefly over. Oh yes, it can easily start again, but then that is material for the next Haiku.

  13. Rose Thurman says:

    Lex,
With all that has happened this year, you have captured my feelings arranging them in such a beautiful way…. Thank you for that 1…….
